Hyderabad's animal rights laws are strong in theory, but they won't stop any abuse if police don't enforce them properly.

Dear Indra,

Hyderabad resident Madhulika Jajodia woke up last week to horrible news. The three-month-old street puppy she had been feeding every single day had been brutally tortured to death for no apparent reason. Her neighbor's son reported seeing the pup's body at her apartment complex's gate, but by the time she got there, there was nothing left of the dog but a trail of blood on the road.

Worst of all, police say they can take no investigative action to protect other puppies from similar harm.

Animal abuse is reportedly on the rise in Hyderabad. Although India has very strong animal welfare laws, local activists say that many residents are unaware that they exist. By the time violations are reported to police, it's often too late to save the animal in question or properly punish their abuser.

Laws can only have power if authorities enforce them. In this case, it's vital that Hyderabad police work with residents to raise awareness of animal protection laws. Tell them to work to stop the abuse and prevent local animals from suffering further!
