Madi the retired circus elephant was bathing in a river when she slipped and fell. Her owner's brother began jumping on her, making it impossible for her to get up. The frail, elderly elephant drowned, helpless and afraid.

Madi the elephant was 48 years old: too elderly and frail to perform in Germany's Universal Circus Renz anymore. She still traveled with the troupe, though, and it was on one such trip that she slipped and fell while bathing in a river.

As she struggled to lift her head above water, unable to breathe, her owner's brother jumped on her. But he wasn't trying to help her: instead, he made it impossible for her to save herself. Madi drowned there, in full view of spectators, frightened and suffering. The whole affair was caught on video.

Elephants are intelligent, sensitive creatures. Madi's owners at the circus had a responsibility to protect her, and they didn't. They still manage several elephants, and they must be stopped immediately.

Tell the German government to step in and shut down Universal Circus Renz!
