Dear Indra,

The Siberian stag or Manchurian wapiti is protected under Russian law; it is native to Siberia and northern China. Five men, all but one of whom work for Russia's Natural Resources and Ecology Ministry, were recently apprehended with rifles and the carcass of this rare animal in the Churapinsky District of the Sakha Republic in Siberia.

According to a police statement, the men did not have the special license required to hunt this rare type of deer. The four officials now face criminal charges.

It is simply outrageous that these four men are still officials in a government agency charged with overseeing Russia's natural resources. These officials' job is to preserve their country's environment and to ensure that endangered animals do not go extinct. Their killing of a rare Siberian deer outright disqualifies them from remaining in their positions.

Russia is home to many endangered species including the Amur (Siberian) tiger, only about 450 of whom are alive. There is ample reason to fear for the survival of these and many other beautiful and rare animals, if the officials charged to protect them are instead killing them in cold blood.

Urge Russia's Natural Resources and Ecology Ministry to fire the four officials.
