Desperate workers are being trapped in a vicious cycle. Horrific working conditions and exorbitant fees force many into bonded labor, a human rights crisis the government continues to ignore.
Dear Indra,
Erwiana was forced to work for months without pay and tortured to the point of immobility. When her injuries finally prevented her from working altogether, her "employers" dumped her in an airport with no more than a one way plane ticket back to Indonesia. She was so badly hurt that she couldn't even walk to the gate.
It seems like something out of a horror movie, but Erwiana's story of torture and abuse is emblematic for hundreds of thousands of migrant domestic workers in Hong Kong.
Call on the Hong Kong government to protect migrant workers.
Fraudulent placement agencies force migrant domestic workers into abusive conditions through deception and coercion. They often charge exorbitant fees of up to 8 months of wages. For workers like Erwiana, who often are the sole support for their families back home, the threat of debt forces them to stay in dangerous working environments.
Lack of governmental oversight lets placement agencies get away with cheating migrant workers and contributes to conditions of modern slavery.
Please sign the petition asking the Hong Kong government to implement stronger regulations for placement agencies and end modern slavery for workers like Erwiana.
