| Success! February was a short month but brought big successes. Care2 members like you started petitions to urge the Oscars to honor a young camera assistant who died on the set, to ban gestation crates for pregnant pigs in Canada and to save the future of a 9-year-old boy -- and they won. Now it's your turn. | Join us! | | Dear Indra, Care2 members made a difference in Germany, in Canada, in the U.K. and at the Academy Awards. Here's how: | Sarah Elizabeth Jones Honored At the Academy Awards After a young camera assistant, Sarah Elizabeth Jones, was struck by a train and killed while making a film in Georgia, filmmaker Anderson Vilien started a Care2 petition calling for her to be included in the In Memoriam tribute at the Academy Awards. The day before the ceremony, Care2 held a virtual memorial for Jones in which people around the world gathered on Twitter to share photos and messages. Then, on Oscars night, at the end of the In Memoriam segment, Jones's name and photo appeared on the bottom of the screen for all 43 million viewers to see. Read more about Anderson's campaign on behalf of the "unsung heroes" of the film industry. | | German Animal Conservationist Who Shot Elephant Has Resigned After finding out that a German environment minister, Ude Wedekind, had killed an elephant in December while on a trip to Botswana -- and emailed selfies of himself with the dead elephant and a gun -- people were outraged. How can someone who's killed an elephant claim to be a champion of endangered wildlife? Care2 members called for Wedekind to step down and, within a matter of days, he resigned. Thanks to more than 37,000 Care2 members telling the pork industry these crates are inhumane, mother pigs have been spared from spending their lives in a space so small they can't even turn around. The ban on gestation crates in Canada's new Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Pigs is a huge and historic victory for animal welfare on Canadian farms. They took action and U.K. health secretary Jeremy Hunt has delayed the start of the program till autumn so people can opt out if they wish. This is a step in the right direction but we still need to keep up the pressure on the NHS to be open about how it uses patient data. His future looked bleak until a family friend, Elva Maria Mendez, started a Care2 petition and thousands rallied around the young boy, asking his school to give him a second chance for a childhood mistake. The school board listened and Anthony is now back where he wants to be, in school. Read more about Elva's successful campaign. | | New York City Will Consider Nonlethal Means to Control Swan Population When New York state officials released a plan to kill 2,200 mute swans, Care2 member Janelle Barabash took action and called for the lives of these beautiful creatures to be spared. Overwhelmed by the passionate response of more than 30,000 people, the New York Environmental Conservation Department has agreed to consider nonlethal ways to control the swan population. It's a win for the swans, but we have to make sure state officials stick to their promises. Sign the petition to make sure New York doesn't kill the swans. | | An Update About Saving Ayla's Rooster, Dallas Five-year-old Ayla bought her rooster Dallas with her own money two years ago. She's been raising him to show at 4-H this summer -- but then the Oregon city where she lives said Dallas is no longer allowed. Ayla's mom started a Care2 petition and more than 32,000 people have signed it so far. On March 7, the Mayor put a "stay" on the order to ban Dallas so he can stay for now -- but that still could change. Sign the petition so Ayla won't have to part with Dallas. | | An Update About Marius the Giraffe Care2 member Julia McCallum started a Care2 petition asking Denmark's Jyllands Park Zoo to spare the life of a giraffe named Marius, after the Copenhagen Zoo killed a giraffe (also named Marius) with a bolt gun in early February. A Jyllands Park zookeeper recently told Julia that, while there is no immediate plan to kill Marius, that could still happen should he become surplus. If you and your friends haven't already asked the zoo to spare Marius' life, make sure you do! Sign the petition so Jyllands Park Zoo knows Marius has many supporters around the world. | That's what you accomplished in February. We love hearing about your success -- please share your own success stories with us at successstories@earth.care2.com | Thanks for all you've done!
