Indra, Right now, massive methane leaks are pumping poison into our atmosphere, heating the planet at a terrifying rate. Each of these "mega-leaks" can have the same climate impact as an entire coal power plant. And yet, they have been left nearly unchecked.
Here's what makes this so infuriating: this isn't some complicated problem that will take decades to fix. Experts say many of these leaks are simply caused by poor maintenance. They could be fixed quickly with basic repairs and oversight. In fact, stopping these leaks could even pay for itself, because the captured methane can be sold as fuel.
And still, nothing.
Methane is responsible for about 25% of global heating today, and scientists warn that its rapid rise in recent years could push us toward catastrophic climate tipping points — points of no return.
But unlike carbon dioxide, methane leaves the atmosphere very quickly, meaning cutting it now could slow warming almost immediately. This is the closest thing we have to an "emergency brake" on climate change, according to experts.
So why are we refusing to take action?
Satellite data has exposed the truth: some of the world's worst methane leaks are coming from facilities in Turkmenistan, operated by state-owned companies like Türkmennebit and Türkmengaz. These are not hidden anymore. They are visible from space. The world is watching, and we now know where accountability must be demanded.
Sign the petition to demand Türkmennebit and Türkmengaz take responsibility, repair these leaks, and stop this preventable climate disaster! |
