The reefs around Indonesia are home to a huge variety of marine life. But those beautiful fish are being captured, often through destructive means, and stolen to live in captivity in American aquariums.

Dear Indra,

The reefs around the Indonesian archipelago are packed with tiny colorful fish and invertebrates. These creatures are gorgeous -- so gorgeous, in fact, that they're incredibly popular in aquariums all over the world. This is putting the reefs and the fish themselves at risk.

Overexploitation of rare species doesn't just pose a serious conservation issue. The methods of capture, including the uses of cyanide and dynamite, are also incredibly destructive.

Fish are also very delicate creatures. Snatching them from their homes and then shipping them around the world is an incredibly stressful experience. It could also expose them to serious harm.

Indonesia barely polices this fast-growing trade at all. Regulation is urgently needed if marine aquariums are not to become yet another major threat to fragile reef ecosystems.

Ask the Indonesian government to take immediate action to save their fish and reefs from the effects of the aquarium trade.
