Dear Indra,
It's extremely important that we teach teenagers about the importance of safe sex and consent. But forcing female students to undergo "virginity tests" on a yearly basis is a demeaning, sexist, ineffective way to do it. That's exactly the practice, however, that Education Chief Muhammed Rasyid wants to implement in Indonesia.
These tests, which Rasyid wants to make compulsory by law in order to "combat promiscuity" among Indonesian teens, would require female students 16 or older to get their hymens examined on a yearly basis until graduation. Never mind that hymens can break from playing sports or due to health problems -- regardless, shaming someone at all for her sexual status is a bigoted, outdated way to police young women about their own bodies. Naturally, male students will be subject to no such humiliation.
What's even scarier is that this is the third proposed law of its kind in Indonesia in the last six years alone. We have to crack down on these sexist initiatives once and for all. Demand that Chief Rasyid abandon his "virginity test" plans immediately for the sake of all Indon esian women.
