Dear Indra,
16-year-old "Liz" was walking home late from her grandfather's funeral when she was attacked by six men. They punched her and kicked her until she was too weak to resist, violently raped her, and threw her unconscious body to a nearby pit-latrine and threw her in.
Liz, after she dragged herself out of the pit, reported the men to the police. They were charged with rape. Their punishment? To cut the grass outside of the police station.
Because of the beating and the rapes, Liz is still bound to a wheelchair months after the attack. She is completely incontinent. And as a report from The Guardian quotes, she can't understand why, with all of the reporters coming to talk to her, her rapists still walk free.
Sexual assault is a terrible problem in Kenya. Advocates report that girls as young as six are regularly assaulted with no justice. The government must show would-be assaulters that they will face a punishment that fits their terrible crime. Demand justice for Liz and other Kenyan rape surivors like her!
