Dear Indra,
Tania the elephant was only a baby when her herd was wiped out in the wild. Left alone in the world, she was immediately sold to a zoo in France. Since then, she has been shipped from place to place for her entire life -- and now, she's ended up in a cramped enclosure in the Tirgu Mures zoo in Romania.
Tania has a foot infection, but she's forced to stand in her own urine and feces all day. She's incredibly stressed: activists report that she sways from side to side and rubs her head against her enclosure, both signs of extreme unhappiness in elephants. And perhaps worst of all, she's desperately lonely.
Elephants are social creatures who mourn their dead and turn to each other for comfort when they need it, just like humans do. But Tania hasn't had another elephant to live with for more than 30 years.
This poor elephant is suffering immensely, and she needs our help. Ask the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria to free her from Tirgu Mures and find her a better home immediately!
