Dear Indra,

The axolotl, with its smile-like expression and webbed feet, is one of the world's most unusual creatures. Or it was. Though the species is listed as "critically endangered" by the IUCN, it is nearly extinct in the wild.

The aquatic salamander, which is known for spending its entire life in its larval form, has been threatened by water pollution, aggressive introduced fish, disease and habitat destruction. Yet Mexico, its native country, has not taken adequate measures to protect it.

If there are axolotls left in the wild, they probably won't be for much longer. Saving and restoring the wetlands around Lake Xochimilco, the axolotl's last known habitat, wouldn't just help rescue the species -- it would also help some of Mexico's other endangered wildlife.
Sign the petition to ask Mexico to step up conservation efforts and save the axolotl!
