Dear Indra,
Throughout Romania, horses are being worked to exhaustion by some locals. They are so thin their ribs stick out when they move; their skin is marked with the scars from beatings; many don't have the energy to stand up for long periods of time. When their owners think they're no longer useful, they abandon them to die or be slaughtered for meat.
Though the country has started to crack down on offenders, the abuse has still continued. And if Romania's animal welfare laws aren't strengthened, there's no guarantee others won't just do the same thing.
And the horses aren't the only animals at risk. Last December, violence against strays erupted throughout the nation. Cats had their spines snapped; litters of puppies were wrapped in blankets and set on fire; one stray dog had her jaw hacked off. It is essential that Romania heighten punishments for those who abus e any animal, whether through neglect or outright violence.
Demand that Romania strengthen its animal welfare laws and stop the cruelty!
