| Success! Have you ever been so passionate about something that you just HAD to act? Tyler Woodard is one Care2 member who did just this by starting a petition to oppose breed-specific legislation -- and he won. | Join us! | | Dear Indra, | Tyler lives in Medford, Oregon, and considers his pit bull, Smokey, to be like his son. When the City Council of Medford proposed breed-specific legislation and singled out pit bulls, Tyler knew he had to do something. Tyler started his Care2 petition for Smokey and for all the pit bulls in his community. A ban on one particular kind of dog stereotypes every dog of that breed. Debates arose in Medford and online; the Medford City Council held hearings; reporters contacted Tyler about his Care2 petition. In March, the Medford Police Advisory Committee announced it would not recommend any dangerous-dog ordinance that targets specific breeds. Read more about Tyler's successful campaign to fight breed-specific legislation -- and about some other great successes you helped create in March. | | Japan Must Stop Its Scientific Whaling Program In defiance of a worldwide moratorium on commercial whaling, Japan has still held annual whale hunts in the name of "scientific research." Arguing the hunts were really a pretext for commercial whaling, Australia began a campaign to ban them in 2010. To put pressure on the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Care2 member Jelena Radovanovic started a petition that more than 67,000 of you signed. On March 31st, the court ruled that Japan's whaling in Antarctica is illegal under international law and must be stopped immediately. Care2 member Phyllis Tietjen's family has owned the property the trees stood on for years and, determined to save them, she started a Care2 petition. More than 68,000 members signed and in March the TxDOT said it would reroute the road to leave the trees undisturbed. Read more about how Care2 members helped to save these historic trees. | | Public Education Saved For Students with Disabilities in Wisconsin Earlier this year, Wisconsin Republicans proposed a measure for special needs vouchers that would take taxpayers' dollars away from public schools and transfer them to private schools. Care2 member Joanne Juhnke knew she had to do something. She started a petition and presented more than 1,100 Care2 members' signtures to legislators. The bill died in committee and public education for students with disabilities across Wisconsin has been saved. Read more about Joanne's successful campaign. | | An Update about Rakuten In another victory for whales, Japan-based online retailer Rakuten has announced it will stop all sales of whale and dolphin meat at the end of April. The company will not only cease to sell whale and dolphin meat, but also all other parts of these endangered animals. It's a great victory for those of us who love whales and dolphins. But Rakuten is still selling products made from ivory from the tusks of elephants. Make sure you sign the petition to tell Rakuten to stop selling ivory. | We love to hear about the successes of Care2 members who are making a difference. Whether you're fighting a local law or determined to draw attention to an international cause, your success deserves recognition.
